Jan. 10, 2014 8:18 AM | Written by Paul Davidson USA Today FILED UNDER Business www.floridatoday.com/article/20140110/BUSINESS/140110002/... Some economists are raising their forecasts for Friday's government report on December employment after a private survey found the strongest business hiring in more than a year. Private payroll processor ADP said Wednesday that businesses added 238,000 jobs in December, the most since November 2011. ADP has had mixed success in foretelling Labor's more closely watched report of private and public-sector job gains. But the firm's accuracy has improved since it began teaming with Moody's Analytics in fall 2012 to compile the report, with the two surveys differing by an average 35,000 to 40,000 job additions each month. Nearly a third of 37 economists surveyed by USA TODAY Wednesday said the ADP report led them to revise up their estimate of last month's payroll gains. Their median forecast is for 205,000 job gains and an unchanged unemployment rate of 7 percent. Joe LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist of Deutsche Bank, who did not participate in USA TODAY's survey, said he has boosted his December estimate to 250,000 additional jobs from 200,000. More critically, while a single month of job gains is difficult to forecast, LaVorgna is among economists who think the labor market will shift into a higher gear this year, with monthly employment gains averaging about 225,000 vs. about 190,000 in 2013. He cited a confluence of positive forces, including higher household wealth and lower debt as well as increased spending and hiring by federal, state and local governments. In November, he noted, a measure of business investment rose solidly, indicating that firms that have held back on capital spending because of uncertainty over federal budget cuts may be ready to launch projects. Although measures of manufacturing and service-firm activity slowed last month, the sectors continue to expand. Other reports have shown the housing recovery gaining steam and retail sales picking up. The Census Bureau said this week that the U.S. trade deficit reached a four-year low in November, prompting many economists to raise their estimates for last quarter's economic growth to more than 3%. "The promised land of meaningfully higher growth is at hand," LaVorgna says. Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors did not change his December jobs forecast as a result of the ADP report. But he says stronger job growth in 2014 should lower the unemployment rate to about 6% by year's end, finally putting upward pressure on wages that have barely kept pace with inflation the past few years. Other economists are more cautious. Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist of High Frequency Economics, has not changed his estimate of 165,000 job gains for December. He cited colder-than-usual weather among the factors that could make the latest ADP report a less reliable indicator.
