Your acceptance record is certainly what I call darned enviable. Starting in around June, gaining sales momemtum as your work has penetrated the proper channels, & now beginning to reap results—being likewise wiser in the matter of editorial requirements & methods of revision . . . . . what more could you expect in five months? Just as I said, it would have been fantastic to suppose that frequent sales could begin right away. Practice, & the discovery of market needs & openings, is the logical fruit of the first half-years—& you have had even more than that! From now on you will be working with a much clearer idea of the whole field & its problems, & sales may reasonably be expected to be more frequent. There could be no question of the sincerity of those whoe predicted your success at the game. All the evidence was in favour. On the one hand your repeatedly-demonstrated gift for vivid & effective writing—& on the other hand your skill in the concscious manipulation of elements to achieve carefully calculated results, as shewn in all your activities both literary & othervise. Given these two factors, what other results was possible? And the case of Klarkash-Ton formed a highly significant precedent. As for your present feeling of burned-outness—I’m sure you don’t need to mind that. With your summer & autumn’s record wordage behing you, you certainly need a breathing spell! As for agents—it is certainly odd that the rigidly practical & action-loving Emir Lhen-Eighur has such a poor sales record as compared with the hustling Soldan Ab’d’el Klin! It looks as though the latter were the better [?scouter]—or persuader—or both—of the two!
Since beginning this letter I’ve been out (3:15–4:15 a.m.) trying to get a sight of the widely advertised Leonid meteors, but with woefully meagre results. In the first place there’s a beastly fog over everything, plus a moon only 3 days past full which blots most faint objects from the sky. Secondly—I profoundly suspect that this shower is proving a fizzle like the long-awaited one of 1899. I’ll see in tomorrow’s papers what observers in fog-free regions report. I walked nearly a quarter of a mile to find a semi-rustic oasis with not electric lights & a good eastern horizon, but in an hour’s time saw only 5 meteors—of which not more than two were really bright. I ought to get my money back at the box-office! I may try again tomorrow night if the weather is half-way decent—but after that there’ll be no hope.
And so it goes. Beatitudes of Yog-Sothoth upon thee!
